It was so great meeting Perla! I was introduced to her from another mommy I interviewed a while back. She was so kind and easy to speak to. She told me all about her job working at a surrogacy agency. It was so amazing to talk to someone who helps people who can’t have kids connect with people to make their dreams of having a family come true. I loved hearing about Peru, where she was from and how her and her husband met while working on a cruise ship. They live in LA without any family. It is very important to her to keep in touch with all her relatives by skyping them as much as they can. This is not just for herself but Ethan recognizes his family and they can, speak to him in Spanish and hear about his milestones. Ethan was such a cute, smart little boy and I am sure he will make a great older brother when his younger sibling arrives this winter.

Making time to skype with the family

Perla’s parents live in Peru and her husbands families live in the South so it is important to them that Ethan gets to see his grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousin as much as possible over skype.

  • Perla will put Ethan in his high chair and then set the Ipad up in front of him so she is not following him around with the Ipad
  • During meal time every day Ethan skypes both sets of his grandparents for about 30 minutes.
  • His grandparents in Peru speak to him in spanish. This helps him learn both languages.
  • Perla started this when Ethan was 6 months.
  • Now when he sees the Ipad he asks for his grandparents and looks forward to it.
  • He now recognizes everyone including all his cousins.
  • All his family can watch him grow.
  • Ethan looks forward to speaking to his family all over the world!
Favorite Recipe
Coconut Quinoa for breakfast

  • Quinoa (any type is fine) Perla prefers the one that comes mixed. It’s more fun to present color to the little ones.
  • Coconut milk (Perla uses vanilla coconut milk for extra flavor)
  • Coconut oil
  • Raisins or Craisins
  • Cinnamon
  • optional: sugar, honey, agave or dates.

Directions (Perla makes enough to be able to freeze some)

  • Cook quinoa until it is al dente
  • add coconut milk and coconut oil (both extremely healthy).
  • continue cooking on low fire until it is the consistency you want (so it looks similar to oatmeal).
  • while it is cooking you can add raisin or craisins and cinnamon.
  • If you want it a little sweeter you can add sugar, honey, agave or dates (dates are sweet enough and can be used instead of other sweeteners).
  • You don’t need to cook it for very long (quinoa cooks very fast and you just need to reach the consistency and taste that you want).
  • Perla usually keeps half of it for breakfast for the next few days and freezes the rest.
